Fine Black and White Artistry
Black and White photography inherently has the capacity to transform ordinary images into beautifully expressive moments. By disallowing the eye to see natural colors, it pushes the brain to interpret what is presented in a more emotional and speculative manner. With very little context, gray scale imagery can generate moods and invoke feelings that color imagery often cannot. It also allows for greater focus of textures, shapes and details that help create an uncommonly intimate viewing of the subject. This is from where Michael Bruno’s passion to work exclusively in the black and white medium stems.
Michael’s early experience with black and white photography started in the darkroom of University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he earned a BFA in Photography in 1992. The curriculum focused primarily on advanced darkroom methods and project critiques. There, Michael discovered the photomontage work of Jerry Uelsmann and began honing his photography and printing skills emulating Uelsmann’s style of work. He also experimented with liquid emulsions and full scale human figure photograms. Outside of school, Michael worked several years as a custom black and white printer for a professional photo lab while building a freelance photography business. With the introduction of digital photography he was forced to abandon the traditional darkroom process and convert his visual workmanship to digital proficiency. Channeling 30+ years of photographic artistry and a mastery of in-studio lighting, Michael has established himself as a premier black and white photographer, and has begun to transform his visual style to motion and video production to further his creative interests.
